Stern, Art du Champa, p. 70, mặc dù không khẳng định sử dụng bất cứ bi ký nào trong việc định niên đại các công trình tưởng niệm thì việc Damrei Krap được xác định niên đại đầu thế kỷ IX, khoảng 802, trên cơ sở tích truyện Jayavarman II trong bi ký Sdok Kak Thom, Cambodia (AD 1052), nhưng với niên đại 802 được qui cho Jayavarman là từ các bi ký sau này. Đối với Mỹ Sơn A1, Stern chỉ rõ, tr. 94, rằng Parmentier “làm việc theo nguyên tắc các hình thái nghệ thuật hoàn hảo hơn thì cổ hơn”. Đó là định kiến nảy sinh ra cách định niên đại sai lầm cho Mỹ Sơn A-1, sau đó hình như đã được hỗ trợ bởi một bi ký sớm được phát hiện gần đó nhưng thực ra lại không có liên hệ gì quần thể khu tưởng niệm. Vì cách xử lý Tháp Mắm của Boisselier quá vụng về, có lẽ vì ông quá tòng phục theo cách xác định của Stern đối với phong cách Bình Định. Trước hết Boisselier gợi ý rằng phong cách đó xuất hiện sớm ngay sau khi thủ đô được cho là đã chuyển về Bình Định, khoảng năm 1000, theo Maspéro, nhưng sau đó khi thấy không ổn, ông đã vẫn tiếp tục vụng về đặt nó vào thế kỷ XII, chắc chắn không ăn nhập gì với quần thể tưởng niệm chính ở khu vực đó, các đền tháp xung quanh Quy Nhơn (Boisselier, Statuaire du Champa, pp. 223, 256-274, 308-9). Những điêu khắc loài quỷ được bảo tồn tốt tại Bảo tàng Nghệ thuật Điêu khắc Chăm Đà Nẵng cho thấy ảnh hưởng Việt Nam/Trung Quốc [Boisselier, pp. 291-3] và phải muộn hơn, có thể thế kỷ XIV hoặc thậm chí XV.
